1863 Marriage to Elizabeth Wilson

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints records indicate that William Poulter was married to Elizabeth Wilson on 18 April 1863 in the Salt Lake City Endowment House. Elizabeth indicated that she was born 16 May 1846 at Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.

1860 US Federal Census for Utah

This record indicates that there is an Emma and a William Poulter living with the family. There were no living children listed by those names on previous records such as the Passenger Lists or the census record for Missouri. I have not been able to uncover any extended family by that name and age that would have been in Utah during that time.

During this census year it was the practice to add individuals to the household or put down the names of deceased children in order to boost the population numbers so that the Utah territory could gain statehood. The oldest known child in this family was named William and he was born 19 Mar 1845 just over 12 months after the couple's marriage. He died in England prior to the family leaving for America. If there was a child born before William then the child would have been conceived out of wedlock unless both Emma and William were premature. Since Thomas and Sarah were close cousins there is the possibility of birth defects, although, there does not seem to be any evidence of this later in their marriage. It was the practice in early England to live with your fiance in order to determine if the couple was able to conceive children, however, this practice was done away with prior to this time period. There is also the possibility that William Sr.'s future second wife was living with the family at that time but her name was not Emma, it was Elizabeth.

Still our crowd was a merry one. Every evening we made large fires. We had a band in our crowd, dancing and singing. The cattle were guarded by two of the brothers every night. One night we killed a beef. It was near my tent. At midnight the large white wolves came howling and snapping their jaws, and followed the next day for several miles. We were now on the river Platt, where the grass was two feet high but no wood but wagon loads of buffalo chips which make a beautiful fire. At this place were large herds of buffalo, hundreds in a drove. My brother William and two more of the brethren took horses and went over the hills to hunt. Night came on, it was dark but the hunters did not come. I fired off guns but not an answer. At last I hoisted a lantern on the wagon top. Soon the three hunters were in the camp loaded with meat. The wolves were after them howling terrible. The hunters said that the lantern in the top of the wagon saved them.
We now traveled about twenty miles. We camped but it was a bad place to camp. No grass. This night eight of the steers had gone back to the last camping place. Two of them was William's. Eight men with eight horses and a week's grub went in search of them. They traced them to the banks of Ashby Fork and there they had crossed the river. While the eight men camped the first night the wolves and bears roared, howled and snapped that seven of the men would not go a foot further, but my brother William took the best horse and went over the river. On the plot he met a train of Saints, 300 wagons this train had got the cattle, my brother helped them across. In three days he overtook us. His eyes were bloodshot, he having had no rest for three days and nights. He was followed by two Indians and three squaws all the time. We killed a beef. The two Indians came into our camp. They were fine looking men, six feet and stout, part of the tribe of Sioux.

Wed. (August) 9th: In sight of Chimney Rock-Drove about 16 miles and still 5 or 6 miles from said rocks, crossed a fine creek today about noon. Distance from other creek about 15, miles.
Thursday (August) 10th: Sunrise Poulter returned with lost cattle. 1 oclock we passed Chimney Rock m camped about 4 on the bank of the Platt[e], no wood and grass poor. Drove our cattle across the river where feed for cattle was first rate.

Between 1850-1854 Accident

Somewhere I have read about William Poulter having an accident while digging a well in St. Louis, Missouri. As I remember, one of his associates dropped a bucket of dirt on his head. He was injured badly and shortly after his recovery the family left for Utah.

If anyone has any information regarding this story, let me know.

"THIRTY-FIFTH COMPANY -- Erin's Queen 232 souls. The ship Erin's Queen sailed from Liverpool for New Orleans, September 7th, 1848, having on board two hundred and thirty two second cabin passengers, including infants; all of these, with the exception of two or three persons, were Saints. The people of Liverpool were astonished to see the order and regularity among them; for while large companies of emigrants upon other ships generally were conspicuous for their cursing and swearing, and were continually finding fault with each other, songs of praise and prayer were ascending up to heaven from the Erin's Queen. Elder Simeon Carter, an American elder, who had labored as a missionary in the British Isles two or three years, was appointed president of the company, which had a prosperous voyage. While numbers of passengers who had crossed the ocean about the same time, died on board, not one of the Saints on the Erin's Queen was lost, and only a very little sickness prevailed among them. The officers and crew were kind and courteous to the passengers; but there were some complaints in regard to the provisions served out on board, the fare not being as good as that provided by law. From New Orleans, passage was secured on a steamboat, with which the journey was continued up the river to St. Louis , Missouri, where the company arrived November 6th, 1848, well and in good spirits. All the Saints stopped at St. Louis for the winter, except four families who went up to Alton, Illinois. Nearly all got employment immediately after their arrival in St. Louis.
